Spring Yard Cleanup Checklist

Get your yard ready for the season with this easy-to-follow spring cleanup guide! After months of winter wear, now’s the perfect time to freshen up your lawn, garden, and outdoor spaces, making sure they’re ready to thrive all season long. Not only will your yard look amazing, but regular upkeep helps prevent future repairs and gives you a head start on gardening.

INSPECT YOUR YARD
Take a walk around your property and make note of what needs attention. Common tasks include:

  • Trimming overgrown shrubs and bushes
  • Cleaning patio furniture
  • Pruning trees
  • Removing holiday decorations
  • Clearing dead stems from potted plants
  • Cleaning gutters and downspouts
  • Raking leaves, pinecones, and needles
  • Detangling vines from trellises

SET PRIORITIES

Plan your projects based on your inspection. For example, trim shrubs and clean gutters before raking so you can tackle everything in one sweep.

Shrubs

  • PRUNE & TRIM

Give your shrubs a healthy boost by trimming back overgrowth. Pruning encourages new growth, prevents disease, and keeps them looking tidy. Tip: If you’ve got early bloomers, wait until after flowering to prune so you don’t cut off buds.

Gardens & Flower Beds

  • CLEAR OUT BEDS

Rake out leaves, debris, and any winter mulch. Remove weeds, dead annuals, and last season’s vegetable plants.

  • EDGE THE BEDS

Define the borders between your lawn and garden beds with an edger. Crisp lines keep mulch in place and add a polished look.

  • MULCH

Refresh your beds with a fresh 2-inch layer of mulch in early to mid-spring. Mulch helps retain moisture, regulate temperature, and enrich the soil.

  • FERTILIZE

Boost soil nutrients by mixing in fertilizer (processed or organic) about 3-5 inches deep before planting. Water thoroughly. For flowering plants, fertilize about a week after the last frost.

  • DIVIDE PERENNIALS

If you didn’t split perennials in the fall, now’s the time! Dividing them in spring helps them settle before the heat kicks in.

  • PLANT

Once your beds are cleared and prepped, it’s planting time!

Lawn Care

  • CLEAN UP

Pick up branches, rake leaves, and clear out any winter debris. Raking improves airflow and promotes healthy new grass growth.

  • AERATE

Help your lawn breathe! Aerating allows water, air, and nutrients to reach the roots. Use a manual, gas-powered, or tow-behind core aerator, or try spike aeration with a pitchfork or spiked shoes. Mow and water a few days before for best results.

  • FERTALIZE

Test your soil’s nutrient levels and pH, then apply a spring-formulated fertilizer to kickstart healthy growth. Early to mid-spring is ideal, just before your lawn’s most active growing period.

With this checklist in hand, you’ll be ready to tackle your spring yard projects like a pro. Here’s to a fresh, healthy, and beautiful outdoor space this season!
