The Story Behind King Ropes Hats

For nearly 80 years, King Ropes has been a symbol of authentic Western craftsmanship and cowboy tradition. What began as a small saddle and rope shop in Sheridan, Wyoming, has grown into one of the most recognizable names in the Western industry, with its iconic hats worn by ranchers, rodeo athletes, and Western enthusiasts around the world.

Built on Wyoming Craftsmanship

King Ropes was founded in 1946 by Don King, a Wyoming native and master leather craftsman. After serving in World War II, King opened his first shop just outside Sheridan, specializing in handcrafted saddles, ropes, and leather goods for working cowboys.

In 1948, the business moved to North Main Street in downtown Sheridan, where it remains a landmark today.

Don King became known for helping pioneer the intricate Sheridan-style floral leather tooling, a carving technique that has become one of the most recognizable forms of Western leather craftsmanship and is still admired by saddle makers worldwide.

From Saddles to Signature Hats

While King Ropes earned its reputation through expertly crafted saddles and ropes, the brand became equally famous for its classic trucker hats featuring the distinctive King Ropes logo.

Simple, durable, and unmistakably Western, these hats have become an everyday staple throughout Wyoming and the Northern Rockies. They’ve been spotted everywhere—from ranches and rodeo arenas to country concerts—and have even been worn by visitors from around the globe, including Queen Elizabeth II during a visit to Wyoming.
